Join Birthrights for an introduction to human rights law and how it can be used as a tool to advocate for safer care and empower women and birthing people to advocate for safe, respectful care. Our session “Human Rights in Maternity Care: helping others navigate the system” will provide an introduction to human rights law and principles and why they matter in pregnancy and childbirth.

Are you a birth worker, doula, childbirth educator, or a peer supporter working with or providing support to pregnant women and birthing people? Do you want to learn more about what human rights are, where they come from and how they apply in maternity care? If so, this training session is for you!

By the end of the session you will be able to answer questions such as:

  • How can human rights support us to advocate for safe and personalised care?
  • What really is informed consent and what does it look like?
  • How can we use human rights to challenge embedded and harmful ways of practice?

We will examine maternity practices that violate human rights and consider what a human rights centred maternity service looks like. The session will provide those supporting pregnant women and birthing people with guidance on how to raise concerns and what resources are available.

If you work for an organisation that supports women and pregnant people and think your whole team might benefit from this introductory session, do get in touch at training@birthrights.org.uk to discuss what a tailored session for your organisation might look like.

A note for healthcare professionals interested in this event: We welcome all those working in the maternity setting at this event, however our training for healthcare professionals is most valuable when undertaken in teams in a hospital setting and tailored for for a healthcare professional audience. If you are a healthcare professional and want to find out more about Birthrights training, please get in touch directly with our Training team to find out more: training@birthrights.org.uk
